History

Thomas G. Powell, Inc. was founded in 1922 by Marvin F. Pollard. It is the oldest and longest running Orthotics and Prosthetics facility in Richmond. The company began in the basement of Marvin Pollard's home in the historical district of Churchill where Mr. Pollard and a young Thomas G. Powell, Sr. main focus was to manufacture and fit metal braces mainly for Polio patients. Due to an influx of brace patients the company quickly outgrew its existing location and relocated on Broad St. in the downtown area across from the old MCV hospital.

In 1932 Tommy Powell, Sr. purchased the company from Mr. Pollard changing the name of the company to Thomas G. Powell. After, the second World War Thomas Powell, Sr. was contacted by the Veterans Administration where they found themselves beginning to focus energies on the amputee population and manufacturing prosthetic limbs for war vets. Joe Powell brother of Thomas Powell, Sr. headed up the prosthetics side of the company so Thomas Powell, Sr. could remain in the Orthotics. The company was again moved further west on Broad St. due to the demolition of the property to bring Interstate 95 through downtown Richmond but this location was short lived. Thomas Powell, Sr. soon after purchased 414 West Broad St. changing our company's name to Thomas G. Powell, Inc. where we remained for over 40 years. Tommy Powell, Jr. a second generation Powell had taken over as company president and head of Prosthetics.

On November 22, 2004 T.G. Powell, Inc. made some big changes under the management of Tommy Powell, Jr. President and Mitch Powell Vice President, head of Orthotics and a third generation Powell. They felt it was very important to give the company a face lift. Thomas G. Powell, Inc. changed it's name to Powell Orthotics & Prosthetics and they moved to a new location 2034 Dabney Rd. for a more modernized facility.

In April of 2006, long time employee's Joe Sullivan CP, Michael Monteiro CP, and Mitch Powell CO, formed a partnership gaining sole ownership of Powell Orthotics & Prosthetics. All efforts were made to benefit the well being our patients. Patient care was always the primary focus of Thomas Powell, Sr. for those that new him and loved him and they want to carry his spirit into the future Powell Orthotics & Prosthetics.
